2022 Recap
Youth Safety Education Day
September 10th, 2022
Eleven years ago, we learned that many young and new workers were injured on the job, and we wanted to do our part to decrease that number in any way we could through proper safety training and education. From that day forward, Youth Safety Education Day was born.
Youth Safety Education Day (YSED) occurs annually on September 10th. The purpose of this day is to provide meaningful safety education, leadership and awareness for youth across Saskatchewan and beyond (up to the age of 25) about the importance of workplace health and safety right when it matters most, at the beginning of the school year. By partnering, sponsoring us and getting involved, you, along with over 300 other industry partners, organizations and schools, have helped us reach over 75,000 youth in a meaningful way!
Sadly, Saskatchewan has traditionally had one of the highest workplace injury rates in the country. Each year in Saskatchewan, approximately 3,200 youth under 25 are injured on the job, and an average of two die yearly from a workplace incident. Gaining this valuable workplace health and safety education before youth take their first step into the workplace or while currently employed in their first job is a KEY STEP in injury prevention.
On behalf of Service Hospitality and its 4,100 members, we would like to extend our more profound appreciation to everyone who supported us this year. We couldn’t have done it without you! A special mention to everyone who sponsored, partnered, and got involved in this year’s events. Also, a special mention to all the organizations and school divisions that had their young workers and students involved this year; we can’t say thank you enough! We truly appreciate you taking the time to be a safety leader and participating in the most successful Youth Safety Education Day the organization has had to date!
As this year’s event closes, we have Youth Safety Education 2023 on our minds! We hope to continue expanding the number of partners and reach an even larger audience. We can’t achieve this without your help! We look forward to connecting with you next year!

A day proudly proclaimed by the Government of Saskatchewan since 2012!
For the past ten years, we have approached the Minister of Labour Relations and Workplace Safety and the Minister responsible for the Workers’ Compensation Board in Saskatchewan to dedicate the day to the safety of our youth in this province. Minister Don Morgan exercised his authority to designate September 10th, 2022, as Youth Safety Education Day for the 11th consecutive year.
This year, we held three successful virtual events, and through your partnership, sponsorship and involvement, we reached over 75,000 young workers and students across Saskatchewan about the importance of workplace health and safety! We kicked off our YSED events on Sept 7th with Mental Health Matters featuring Service Hospitality Safety Advisor Beyanka Maignan, followed by a special presentation, Make Safety Personal, with International Motivational Speaker & Safety Advocate Candace Carnahan on Sept 8th & 9th! Special thank you to Candace for sharing her personal workplace injury experience and to all those who attended our virtual events this year!
