What is the Answer to Reducing Serious Injuries in the Workplace?

In the recent article, WorkSafe targets high-risk industries in new fatality and injury strategy, it states “serious injuries were up by almost 100, with reports through Workers’ Compensation Board reaching 2472 in 2018”. With an increase in serious injuries and fatalities due to workplace incidents sitting at 48 in 2018 and over 25 to date in 2019, it is imperative that immediate action is taken to focus on understanding the importance of workplace safety. Service Hospitality has been promoting and delivering safety programs within schools throughout the province over the last 8 years.

Through addressing youth, we are paving the way to safer workplaces in the future, decreasing the number of injuries and fatalities and achieving “mission zero”. From September to December, our safety advisors have delivered safety presentations to over 2800 elementary students in Saskatchewan, each time encouraging students to be safe in their environment. If a person can be educated at various times throughout his or her life about the importance of workplace safety and what to do to create a safe workplace, we have a better chance of reducing workplace injuries and fatalities in our province.

In addition to our elementary safety programming, since the start of the 2019-2020 school year, our safety advisors have already delivered the “how to be safe at work” message to thousands of high school students. We’ve been busy attending career days at all Regina Catholic high schools, Campus Regina Public high school, and Walter Murray High School in Saskatoon. We believe starting the awareness about safety at a young age is our best opportunity to instill the mindset of wanting to work in a healthy and safe environment.

Don Morgan, Minister of Labour Relations and Workplace Safety says in the article, “every fatality takes a heavy toll on the province, and on the families left behind”, and “I think we owe it to those families to do everything we can to ensure that those workers can have the best chance of coming home safe”. Service Hospitality relays these words to every student that we engage with. Our goal is to create a healthy and safe workplace mindset in individuals and workplaces across the province.
