Since 2012, Service Hospitality has advocated for a dedicated day focused on youth safety in Saskatchewan based on some alarming statistics, including the increased likelihood of experiencing a workplace injury for workers under the age of 25. 75% of young people also get their first jobs within the service or hospitality sector and eventually continue to more hazardous careers in the future. That’s why Youth Safety Education Day is so vital; when youth are exposed to health and safety education during their formative years, they are far more likely to become advocates for a culture of healthy and safe workplaces.
This year, and for the past 12 years, the government of Saskatchewan has graciously proclaimed September 10th as Youth Safety Education Day. In the proclamation letter from Minister Don McMorris, he expressed the government’s appreciation for the continuous commitment and hard work that Service Hospitality has put into fostering a culture of safe and healthy workplaces. This ongoing support from the government underscores the importance of our mission and the positive impact we’re making in our province.
For Youth Safety Education Day to succeed, the support of sponsors and partners is essential. This year, we were fortunate to secure the support of more than 200 partners and 11 major sponsors. We extend our most profound appreciation to everyone who has supported YSED2023. We couldn’t have done it without you!
This year also marked a significant milestone as we were able to resume in-person events for the first time since 2019. We’re immensely grateful to Bishop James Mahoney High School in Saskatoon, Lumsden High School in Lumsden, and Miller Comprehensive High School in Regina for generously hosting us for these lively and engaging events.
Our events featured captivating keynote speaker Allan Kehler, whose powerful message encouraged students to open up, seek help when needed, and be more aware of mental health issues. Through an interactive quiz and an entertaining game of PieFace, Allan ensured that students left with a deeper understanding of mental illness, stress, resilience, and their impact on safety at home, in their communities and in their workplaces.
Service Hospitality is thrilled to announce that this year, we engaged 65,000 young individuals through our events and partnerships. This achievement stands as a testament to the power of collective effort within a province where we unite to prioritize workplace safety. It’s about making Saskatchewan a safer place to work for our employees, students, children, nieces, nephews, neighbours, and everyone in our community.
Youth Safety Education Day continues to evolve and expand with each passing year as we endeavour to make a more meaningful impact on youth throughout the province. We can’t wait to achieve bigger and better things for Youth Safety Education Day 2024!
