The Canadian Mental Health Association statistics state that in any given year, 1 in 5 people in Canada will personally experience a mental health problem or illness. Furthermore, the statistics show it is estimated that 10-20% of Canadian youth are affected by a mental illness or disorder – the single most disabling group of disorders worldwide. These stats are just some of the many reasons why Service Hospitality, in partnership with Safety in Schools, developed our online course, “Your Mental Health & Well-Being”.

Service Hospitality has partnered with Safety in Schools over the past 4 years now. This partnership has served us both by reaching our mutual goals of educating youth about physical safety in the workplace, with the expectation that youth workplace injuries would be reduced. But now, with the growing number of individuals experiencing psychological struggles in the workplace, we realized there was a need to provide education to youth about their mental health. The Center for Addiction and Mental Health statistics state that in any given week, at least 500,000 employed Canadians are unable to work due to mental health problems and the cost of a disability leave for a mental illness is about double the cost of a leave due to a physical illness.
We are actively working towards reducing these numbers through our training sessions, education conferences, consultations and online courses. This course was created to promote and provide awareness to youth and assist them in managing their mental health and well-being. It is appropriate for students from Grades 7 through 12, and is available to students in any province through the Safety in Schools online library.
