Our ultimate purpose has always been to stop people from getting hurt. Effective November 22nd, 2021, I began as the Interim Chief Executive Officer (CEO) for Service Hospitality. As the new CEO, I wanted to take this opportunity to introduce myself, reflect on the past year, and communicate our continued commitment to helping your organizations achieve health and safety excellence.
Although I am new to this role, I have been with Service Hospitality for 9 years in various administrative and senior leadership positions; most recently as the Operations Manager. Over that time, I have gained a lot of experience and an appreciation for the industry, the people, safety, and Service Hospitality.
First, I would like to thank my predecessor, George Marshall, for his enduring commitment, passion, motivation, and leadership. Over the last 11 years, his influence and immense contribution to the organization have been admirable. He helped transform Service Hospitality into what it is today, a strong team of dedicated professionals with incredible products and services for our members. It’s bittersweet to see him moving on, but I wish him every success in his future endeavours and next chapter.
2021 was another year in which we all had to face new – and in many cases – very important challenges, both in our professional and personal lives. For Service Hospitality, it meant adapting to change, being innovative, and finding ways to provide value to the employers and our membership. We shifted towards having fewer in-person activities, offering virtual services where needed, leveraging our partnerships, and adding three industry-specific streams (Hospitality, Community Services, and a General Stream) to our HSLC program. We signed Memorandums of Understanding (MOUs) with both local and national partners to continue to add value and new offerings to the membership. By the end of the year, we are projecting to reach an audience of 80,000 people. Over the last 12 years, we have brought injuries down from over 2250 to a projected 1247 this year. That represents thousands of injuries that never happened, because of the hard work being done by this industry every day. In addition, we anticipate having a total of 65 HSLC certificates and having the highest standard for safety management systems that will include the integration of psychological health and safety. What an amazing accomplishment!
I want to thank each one of you – the employers, our members, partners, stakeholders, and customers. You are the reason we show up every day. You are the reason we do what we do. You inspire us, encourage us, and give us purpose. Thank you for your continued support, patience, and for trusting in us to be your safety experts.
As we prepare for 2022, I am looking forward to all the new and exciting things that Service Hospitality has in store. I am confident that we will persevere and continue to achieve great successes together. Despite the changes in 2021, the staff and board of Service Hospitality remain strong and resilient. We are committed to making a difference and helping all our members become healthy and safe workplaces that are prospering.
Sincerely,
Bay Stenz
Chief Executive Officer
