Since 2016, the number of psychological injury claims accepted by the Saskatchewan WCB has grown by over 180%! If psychological health and safety isn’t on your radar, it needs to be!
Preventing injuries is always priority #1, but what if a psychological injury occurs? Does your organization have a process in place to manage that claim effectively? Effective claims management processes used for handling physical injury claims will provide a foundation for the management of psychological injuries…but only if you’re prepared.
The old saying goes, “you don’t know what you don’t know,” and for managing psychological injury claims – this couldn’t be truer. If you are unsure of your worker’s abilities in the workplace, get their medical information. As the employer, your role is to accommodate based on medical restrictions, not determine the restrictions yourself.
In a previous article, Supporting Employee Mental Health While Reopening the Workplace, we provided some questions for employers to consider regarding the state of psychological health and safety in their workplaces.
When it comes to managing psychological injury claims in the workplace, employers should consider these additional questions:
-
Do all employees know what a psychological injury is and what some potential traumatic events in their workplace may look like?
-
Do all employees know who to report to when they have witnessed a traumatic event or sustained a psychological injury?
-
Does the person(s) receiving the initial report of injury know what to do when one is reported?
-
Does everyone involved know the process that must occur following an injury (psychological or physical)?
Service Hospitality’s Claims Management training course will walk through these questions and provide you with practice and tools you can start using immediately!
Don’t wait and wonder when you could be taking action. Contact Service Hospitality today.
