Educating Saskatchewan Youth – One Presentation at a Time

Did you know, 45% of young people – aged 15 – 24 – and new hires, are the most at risk of injury on the job?

On average, there are 4000 young people getting hurt on the job every year and approximately 817 of those injuries come from the service and hospitality industries, in Saskatchewan. However, with proper safety training and education, these injuries can be prevented!

One area that Service Hospitality focuses on is educating and providing key resources to our youth about workplace health and safety. For the last 5 years, we have been delivering safety presentations to Regina students and, in 2018 alone, we have seen a 14% decrease in youth injury numbers. As Service Hospitality gathered statistics on the youth injuries in the province, Saskatoon showed a 27% increase in injuries during Regina’s injury decrease. Seeing these numbers, resulted in a new direction that led to expanding Service Hospitality’s youth initiative to Saskatoon. Throughout the 2018 – 2019 school year, over 2400 students in Saskatoon have been reached with more growth on the horizon!

Service Hospitality’s safety education is accomplished through the following programs:

The 2018-2019 school year brought many new and exciting accomplishments for Service Hospitality. More school divisions became involved, a valuable mental health presentation for grade 8 students was established, and the amount of high schools utilizing Safety in Schools’ courses has increased; as a result, we reached more young individuals, than ever before, with the important message of workplace safety.

The Ministry of Education has once again declared September 10th, 2019 as Youth Safety Education Day. Overall, we are expecting to reach over 40,000 youth and already have over 190 partners participating. If you are interested and haven’t partnered, you’ll want to do so now!  Saskatchewan educators and organizations that employ young workers are truly a vital part of the process!

Our goal is to bring safety education and awareness to as many Saskatchewan youth as we can and reduce the youth injury rates in our province!
